Intelligent Design (ID) is based on the belief that the mechanics of life are too complex to have come about by natural processes. The complexity of modern life is thus taken in ID as evidence that a Supreme Being initiated life miraculously and must therefore exist.
Most scientists, including those who believe in a Supreme Being, cannot accept such an argument. After all, the history of science is the history of uncovering natural explanations for previously unexplained phenomenon. So a scientist cannot assume something is miraculous simply because it is not currently understood.
One reason the thorn of intelligent design remains stuck in the side of science (and religion) is because a reasonable chemical pathway for the origin of life has not been developed.
The Darwinian Polymer Model (DPM) provides such a pathway. According to the model, nothing more than chemistry and evolution were required.
While chemical origin of life models diminish the Intelligent Design argument, they should not necessarily be taken as evidence against the possibility of a Supreme Being.
